Full-Time Custodian

Job Description

Napa Valley College is seeking to fill a Custodian position within the Facilities Services department.  Facilities Services provides maintenance and safe operations of the college’s physical properties, custodial services and grounds maintenance to ensure that they are in the best possible condition to enhance the teaching and learning environment.  The incumbent in this position will be responsible for conducting the daily cleaning and maintenance of the College facilities and grounds; using cleaning supplies and equipment to keep the interior and exterior of the  facilities looking clean; responding to request for minor repairs; performing routine cleaning task ensuring  assigned spaces are prepared for the next day; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; maintaining campus safety; and monitoring assigned site(s) to minimize  property damage, loss and liability exposure. This job reports to the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President, Administrative Services.

This is a full-time, 12-months-per-year, classified position. The salary has an appropriate placement on range 3 of the current Classified Salary Schedule.  The starting salary range is $3,301-$3,822/month with future steps up to $4,646/month (includes 5% shift differential for evening hours).  Placement on the salary range is made based on experience.  The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (schedule subject to change during summer months).  The college offers a fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, employee assistance program, and public employee retirement system membership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Cleans campus spaces, pool and ground areas utilizing chemicals and materials that meet OSHA compliance standards (e.g. restrooms, classrooms, locker rooms, conference rooms, offices, receptacles, trash cans, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Inspects campus facility for daily operation (e.g. building access doors, security system, restrooms, trash and garbage cans, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in a clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
  • Maintains supplies used to perform cleaning duties (e.g. chemical solutions, paper products, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
  • Performs minor maintenance (e.g. automatic scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, fixtures, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring equipment and/or facility components are in safe and working order.
  • Prepares campus facility for daily operations for the purpose of ensuring campus facilities are operational and ready for occupancy.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, alarms, emergency custodial calls, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintain a safe, functioning educational environment.
  • Sets-up and takes down furniture, equipment, etc. for the purpose of ensuring that rooms are set-up in accordance with instructions for classroom activities, campus activities, special events, and meetings.
  • Transports equipment, supplies, and campus waste for the purpose of maintaining effective operation of facilities.

Other Functions:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned (e.g. security building checks, responding to emergency requests, monitoring facilities during special events, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the campus.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: ?operating equipment and materials used in industrial maintenance; adhering to safety practices and procedures; and handling hazardous materials such as bodily fluids and strong chemicals.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. ?Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures; health standards for handling biohazards like bodily fluids and strong chemicals: job-related codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; job-related equipment; and record keeping and record retention practices.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with others; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team and independently; analyzing issues and determining appropriate course of action; applying material handling techniques; being available on-call; displaying mechanical aptitude; organizing tasks; setting priorities; working extended hours, some weekends and evenings; solving problems; working with frequent interruptions; and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.

Work Environment:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or ?crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 65% walking, and 30% standing. ? The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury ?and/or illness. Job requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Experience:

One (1) year of job-related experience.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.
